Heaven’s College Restored as Empire Celebrates in the Month of Life
The Empire today received Margaret Hale as its new Cardinal Luminary of Oswald, guardian of order and stillness. Her Imperial Majesty Empress Athena II conferred the Rite of Ascension at the Cardinal Temple of Aldenhurst this morning, restoring the College to its full complement following the unexpected passing of Edmund Voss in January.
The ceremony, conducted before a congregation of senior clergy, members of the Legislative Assembly, and representatives of the Imperial Council, was a solemn and magnificent occasion. Her Imperial Majesty, the Daughter of Heaven, presided with characteristic composure. Robed in the deep purple of her office, her bearing was one of deep and personal investment in the rite. At its conclusion, the assembled guests rose in prolonged, grateful applause, the College of Cardinals Luminary complete once more.
Cardinal Luminary Hale arrives at the supreme seat of the Cult as perhaps the most quietly distinguished figure of her generation. Her tenure as Cardinal of the Domain of Stonebridge, spanning nearly two decades, is spoken of with uniform reverence by those who served under and alongside her. She is a woman who has understood from the earliest days of her vocation that the robes do not ennoble the one who wears them, but rather it is the wearing, the daily and unglamorous act of service, that ennobles the robes. Across the Domain of Stonebridge, she was consistently accessible, unhurried, and possessed of a theological rigour unaccompanied by any appetite for the theatre of rank; qualities that speak, those present at Aldenhurst observed, to a lifetime already lived in Oswald’s image.
It is in this last quality that many within the Cult have, in the days preceding the ceremony, chosen to dwell most warmly. “Cardinal Luminary Hale has spent her career reminding those in her charge that the office exists for the faithful,” said Cardinal Arnold Pemberton of the Domain of Larkspur, speaking at the ceremony’s conclusion. “Never once has she given anyone cause to think otherwise.”
Her Luminary’s record of scholarship is considerable, without being ostentatious. Her annotated commentary on the Rites of Settlement, first circulated among the Cardinals of the southern Domains in 2019, has since become a reference of quiet but genuine authority in clerical formation across the Empire. She has published no proclamations, sought no audiences beyond those demanded by duty, and accumulated nothing in the way of personal renown that she did not immediately redirect toward the service of those in her Domain’s care.
Celebrations across the Empire reflected the magnitude of the occasion. In Eddington, the bells of the Cardinal Temple rang at the conclusion of the rite, and public feasts were laid on in the city’s squares. Similar observances were reported from the provincial capitals, with particular festivity noted in Stonebridge itself, where the new Cardinal Luminary’s elevation was met with scenes of extraordinary communal warmth. Sources close to the Empress note that Her Imperial Majesty received word of the Stonebridge celebrations with considerable pleasure.
The Empire’s Rite of Ascension for a Cardinal Luminary is among the most significant ceremonies the Cult produces, and today’s occasion carried a weight commensurate with that tradition. The College of Cardinals Luminary now stands restored. Twelve voices in their proper arrangement, in the month of Vivian, as life returns to its fullness.
