After recently coming forward with their support for abolition at the “Dappies”, Queen Aiyisha and her son and heir Prince Alsheer have abdicated the throne Thursday evening. Releasing the following the statement, the move leaves the Monarchy vacant for the first time in Doatian history.
Queen Aiyisha: “The will of the people is clear; the Doatian Monarchy must be abolished. The end is here. An institution created during Doatia’s founding with the Great Mother, originally as a body to lead the nation, it transitioned into a ceremonial position to inspire Doatia and remind her people of the values of our nation. After tumultuous times, and the treason of my daughter, Ayana Bokum, it became apparent to me that this institution has no place in modern society.
I have subscribed to the notion that all men and women are created equal, and that we should be treated as such. However, the realities of my position and this institution contradict that value. I could no longer tolerate that, and I am ashamed that I have for so long.
Ayana’s betrayal showed me, Prince Alsheer, the people of Doatia, and the world what is at stake if one of the world’s strongest countries has a monarch that goes rogue. She didn’t just overstep, she threatened domestic and global security. She led an uprising against our home, the nation we all love.
Loyalty to Doatia, above all. Not a figurehead. Not an anti-democratic monarchy.
I married into this family and have loved being a part of it. I have loved being your Queen, it’s truly been the honor of my life. But I can no longer tolerate an institution that logic tells me is a relic of an old world which no longer exists.
It is for these reasons and more, that I have decided to abdicate the throne. My son and would-be heir agrees with me and has opted to abdicate as well.
After decades of service to my home in the form of its Queen, that service comes to an end. But my service to my nation in general will never end. I will pursue service, however, from this point forward as Aiyisha Bokum. I am no longer your Queen.”
Her statement has gone viral over the last few hours, with every major news source covering it.
Former Prince Alsheer, when stopped by reporters has said “Hopefully the decision of my mother and I to leave this outdated institution behind will fuel the flame of abolition. Let’s get this done.”
Chancellor Bertoni released a statement in response to the abdication: “Even the members of the royal family know that the word “royalty” has no place in modern society. If the former Queen and her heir can come support abolition, we can certainly get it done.”
Dontae Rose of the Doatian Nationalists, however, blasted the move as destabilizing and further encroachment of Doatia’s traditional values. He vowed to work with conservative and nationalist allies across Doatia to defeat the abolition movement.
With the Monarchy vacant, the Chamber is restricted by the constitution to only voting on filling the seat of the crown, proposing an amendment to the constitution, and passing a budget. All other proposals and policies can’t be taken up on the floor until the seat is no longer vacant. This effectively ties the Chamber’s hands, mandating that they resolve the issue of abolition before moving onto other business. Pundits, supporters, and critics alike point out that this was likely a deliberate move by the former Queen to play her final, strongest card in favor of abolition.
