Helga Wuopio, leader of Republic Now, has become the new Prime Minister of Zongongia, after meeting with King Osvald this morning. Despite concerns that the King would refuse Wuopio, the meeting went smoothly, and the five-party coalition led by Republic Now will form the next government. Fears of an imminent civil war have lessened as a peaceful transfer of power now seems likely.
As part of the coalition deal, each party (Republic Now, Communist Party, Green Ecology, Women Rising and Tomorrow Party) will have the opportunity to hold a referendum with one question of their choice in April 2025. Republic Now have announced that their referendum topic will indeed be on the abolition of the monarchy. The other four parties have yet to confirm their topics.
After the announcement that the coalition would be formed, the radical anti-monarchy group holding the town of Havkantsborg have announced that they will end their occupation of the historical town and will allow authorities access to the area. This ends an almost ten-month “siege” of the medieval town, which has gained much attention for the uniquely old-fashioned situation. A number of production companies have already begun considering making movies based on the situation.
Many people will be breathing a sigh of relief now that the crisis in Zongongia appears over. But without knowing what topics five simultaneous referendums will ask questions on, this relief may be short-lived.
