Argasun Qorchi of the incumbent Taragaian People’s Revolutionary Party has narrowly defeated his opponent for President in Taragai’s recent elections. The final results placing Qorchi ahead of his rival, Khadagan Daldurkhan, were announced today by Taragai’s General Election Commission.
Candidate | Party | Votes | % |
Argasun Qorchi | Taragaian People’s Revolutionary Party | 562,718 | 51.93 |
Khadagan Daldurkhan | Democratic Front of Taragai | 520,948 | 48.07 |
1,083,666 | 100.00 |
In the vote for the State Great Khural, the TPRP will also maintain a majority, albeit a narrow one.
Party | Seats |
Taragaian People’s Revolutionary Party | 39 |
Democratic Front of Taragai | 34 |
Independent/Other Party | 3 |
Post-election polling indicated that Qorchi and the TPRP may have retained power due to a surge in votes from Taragaians preferring to stick with familiar leadership. The TPRP has led Taragai for over 90 years, and theories that voters would associate Qorchi with the previous TPRP regime under Jirghogadai Tömörbataar appear to have been incorrect. Many of those polled also stated their belief that Qorchi would prove to be a stronger leader than Daldurkhan in dealing with the insurgency in western Taragai.
Despite Qorchi and the TPRP retaining power, their narrow advantage will require them to work with the Democratic Front in order to run the country. Under the transitional agreement between the TPRP and the Democratic Front, Qorchi is expected to nominate Daldurkhan as Prime Minister to the State Great Khural when that body takes up its seats on March 31st. The legislature will need to approve Daldurkhan’s nomination, but is widely expected to do so.
