Prominent Geminus Lawyer Arrested for Alleged Ties to Organized Crime

The Eirian capital’s legal community was left reeling today after the law office of Demarā Legal was raided by officers of the Ministry of Justice’s Department of Investigation and Enforcement. The office was founded by Elodij Demarā, an up-and-coming lawyer and legal scholar within the business law sector who was walked out of her firm this morning in handcuffs. According to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Justice, the raid was ordered after evidence of financial misconduct (including money laundering and fraud) was discovered by the Office of Organized Crime.

Prior to her arrest, Demarā had a lauded legal career that spanned over the course of a decade. She received her B3-L from Central Geminus University and her M3-L in Business Law from the prestigious Leimane University of Public Studies. After a few years at Krastins, Kozlova, and Duran, she founded her own firm in Geminus, renting out a large office space in the capital’s 12th Street Tower (which is famous for its law and consulting firms).Through that firm, Demarā established herself with work in corporate mergers and personal consulting for affluent business owners.

However, it was likely her latter work that brought her into the sightlines of the Ministry of Justice. One of her biggest clients, prominent hotel proprietor and mainstay of the Kōt-Libre investment community Raimonds Svilans, was recently arrested on a litany of charges ranging from various financial crimes to smuggling and racketeering. Given that the Office of Organized Crime was leading the investigation, local press was quick to speculate that Svilans was a Rekē dei Jur, a type of localized crime boss that had been largely thought extinct until the Eirian Civil War. If Svilans was an RJ, his criminal dealings are likely what has Demarā facing suspicion.

Demarā’s lawyer released a statement a few hours after her arrest. “Kurena Demarā had no knowledge of her client’s alleged misconduct, and we will look to prove that within the coming days. While I appreciate the work that the Department of Investigation and Enforcement does to keep our community safe, there is no denying that they made a mistake here.”

Elodij Demarā is set to appear before a judge this evening at the Belanje Judicial Complex. More information will be published as this case develops.
