Makeup influencer arrested for drug smuggling in Costeno

A makeup influencer based in Costeno has been arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs disguised as makeup powders across the border from numerous countries.

Mia Murillo, 23, was arrested at her seaside home early this morning by a team of specialist drug enforcement agents who secured the property. The search is ongoing. Murillo, who has over 17.4 million followers on social media, is popular for sharing reviews of luxury makeup products and makeup tutorials.

Murillo’s social media content involves reviewing numerous products, many of which were in a powder format – and many of which are imported. Speculation suggests – though investigators have not confirmed – that the volume of products ordered produced suspicions either in number or size of packages, or in her tax forms where some amount of spending may have been listed as business expenses.

The arrest has attracted international social media attention, with posters on both sides passionately defending or condemning Murillo. One group has already organised a “Free Murillo” protest outside a police station in Carville, attended by around 15 people, all under the age of 25. There is no evidence Murillo is being held in this particular police station.

Murillo’s detractors have been quick to jump on the bandwagon, claiming her content has been “sus” for years. One poster wrote: “[Murillo] tries every product under the sun and just parrots the PR lines… she’s clearly not actually paying attention to how they look lol”.

The search of Murillo’s beachside property continues.
