Polls show mixed feelings in Huenya elections

Deputy Eileen Finch (CC - Panite) has a tough road ahead to challenge President Xiadani

A recent poll shows mixed feelings on the current state of the Huenyan presidential race.

The poll was conducted on May 17th by Huenya’s H1 television network and the Center for Media Studies at the Huenyan National University of Chuaztlapoc. The poll shows that most voters questioned were not impressed by the decision of the Conservative Party and the Party of Huītzilōpōchtli to unite their campaigns.

The poll revealed, however, that the gambit could still pay off for the new CP/PH alliance if they succeed in recruiting their preferred presidential candidate. That possible candidate, Director Cuetlancaona of the Federal Intelligence Service, still stands within striking distance of incumbent President Xiadani of the Unification Party.

Without Cuetlancaona as a candidate, however, the poll indicates that the President remains virtually guaranteed to be elected to a second term.

Reasons for these outcomes differed widely among poll respondents. Some indicated that they viewed UP rivals such as the PH and the CP as merely clones of the same conservative platform as the President’s, with no comparable track record of success or achievement to recommend them. Others expressed a belief that Cuetlancaona would provide more stable governance than Xiadani, who has been seen as overly aggressive and too unwilling to compromise in some circles.

The results of the poll immediately generated responses from the more prominent parties. The spokesperson for the PH/CP coalition, Ezlotl, called it “fake news” and said that the coalition “is on track to pull off the biggest electoral surprise ever seen on the Huenyan subcontinent.”

The only party seen as a credible challenger to the Unification Party, the Centrist Coalition, also isn’t ready to throw in the towel despite daunting poll numbers. The CC is also making a bid in the Cuetlancaona sweepstakes. The party’s vice-presidential candidate, Dep. Yarecapan (Ixtenco), has announced that he would step aside in favor of Cuetlancaona. “A combination of Dep. Finch and Director Cuetlancaona would vault Huenya into the future. The stable, sane and responsible leadership of a President Finch would continue to build Huenya without risking everything we’ve already built through Xiadani’s domestic belligerence and grandstanding on the international stage. The guidance and leadership of a Vice-President Cuetlancaona would build on his legacy of service keeping Huenya safe and secure. Such a ticket is the only proper choice for our people.”

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Unification Party, Ixmina, said that “President Xiadani and the Unification Party are the recognized leaders of Huenya since we gained our independence, and we’ll prove that yet again on June 1st.” Ixmina dismissed the PH/CP coalition as “electorally, intellectually and socially irrelevant.” She also dismissed the Centrist Coalition’s criticisms of the President, saying that the CC “is too soft and too enamored of starry-eyed idealism” to protect and build the Huenyan state.

“The Xiomeran Empire, or rogue regimes like the Arana regime that once terrorized Milintica, aren’t impressed by gentle approaches or stopped by requests to please behave themselves. Terrorists like the Xiomeran Defense League or the Golden Blade insurgents only shoot at you more if you try to negotiate with them. President Xiadani realizes this, as does the Unification Party. Our leadership has, frankly, saved Huenya at home and made us relevant on the same international stage that Ms. Finch and her party would cede to others. A Centrist Coalition leadership would doom this country.” Ixmina added that the Unification Party’s current dominant position in the polls “is all the proof you need that Huenyans know fully well who is best suited to lead the Federation into the future.”
