The Peoples’ Democratic Army of Milintica has been deployed to several cities in that country to bring an end to recent protests. Initial reports indicate that hundreds of people have been detained, as the Army provides backup to the National Police to shut down the protests.
The Army has been deployed to the cities of Wairarapa, Utlamec and Kōputaroa, as well as the capital Huānoch overnight. Reports indicate that Army units have also been deployed to several smaller communities. The Milintican government has shut down internet and phone services in the affected communities, in an apparent bid to prevent protesters from coordinating their efforts.
Army units have also occupied the offices of the Milintican Peoples’ Party, Progressive Party and Green Party in the capital. Prior to the communications shutdown, reports of soldiers rounding up activists from opposition parties had been posted to Milintican social media platforms.
The Representative Assembly, Milintica’s legislature, has also been blocked off by soldiers with tanks and armored vehicles. Legislators are reportedly being barred from entry with the exception of Milintican Communist Party legislators. Multiple arrests of opposition legislators were reported at the Assembly building as well before communications were terminated.
President Neina Arana has declared a week-long state of emergency, which she warned would be extended if unrest continued.
