The Huenyan Federal Legislature has ratified the Dassault Treaty today with a unanimous vote in favor in the Chamber of Executives. The Chamber of Deputies voted 271-27 in favor, with 20 abstentions. Two Deputies were absent and did not vote.
The abnormally large number of abstentions in the Chamber of Deputies was due to Green Party legislators abstaining as a bloc. The Green Party of Huenya issued a statement saying that they supported the idea of the UCS in general. However, the creation of a Caxcanan Defence Council to coordinate UCS defense policy concerned the Greens, who argued that such a council could lead to even greater militarization and conflict in Caxcana. “When nations start forming military alliances, it raises tensions, rather than lowering them,” the statement read. “For that reason, we abstained rather than voting against the Dassault Treaty. We are not anti-UCS, but we are anti-militarism.”
The votes in favor of the treaty in the Chamber of Deputies crossed ideological and party lines. The only votes against came from the Huenyan Communist Party and Democratic Socialists of Huenya legislators, who also voted as a bloc. “In solidarity with our comrades in Milintica, and with the workers and people of Huenya and all Caxcana, we vote to oppose the spread of capitalism and corporate-sponsored tyranny masquerading as democracy,” Jonathan Ferrón (HCP-Chicaticue) told the Chamber. Ferrón was interrupted by a legislator from the Huenyan Peoples’ Party, Zyachel (HPP-Tlilpotonqui). He accused Ferrón and the HCP of being “plants and agents of Neina Arana” who were “trying to destroy Huenya and the UCS”. He also accused HCP legislators of being “either agents of the Xiomeran Empire or its useful idiots like Arana and her other followers.” The interruption and accusations led to a brief spate of object-throwing, shouting and physical altercations between HPP and HCP legislators. Federal Police, who are usually in the area as such disputes are not an uncommon occurrence in the Chamber of Deputies, restored order quickly enough for the vote to be completed.
While support was widespread for the treaty in the Legislature, some of the more conservative Huenyan legislators did raise questions about the proposed new UCS structure. “One nation, even a longstanding and dear friend to Huenya such as Eiria, having a complete majority in this UCS assembly is a concern,” Conservative Party legislator Mecatl (HCoP-Yarequetzal) told DTNS. “It is also odd to us that our friends Manabí Rive get to host a permanent UCS institution, and our Eirian friends do also, but Huenya does not. We do not believe these were intended as slights or anything, but in the years to come we do hope that Huenya gets more Assembly seats and the honor of being home to some of the UCS’s institutions in the future.” Mecatl said, however, that the good of the UCS changes greatly outweighed the “minor” concerns his party had.
That belief seems to be shared by Huenya’s President Xiadani, who signed off on the ratification an hour after the vote. “This expansion of the UCS will benefit both Huenya and our allies. It will help bring stability to Caxcana, and gods know we need some of that in Caxcana. It will also serve as a vital shield against the evil Empire in our midst,” the President said, referring to Xiomera.
